South Knoxville Dogwood Trails

Knoxville is well known for many things, like the World’s Fair in 1981, the Sunsphere, the University of TN, and its beautiful Dogwood trails. Spring is here, and the trails are open! But did you know the trails have a history dating back to 1947?

Have you ever wondered about the history of the Dogwood trails in Knoxville? In 1947, a journalist visited Knoxville and wrote, “Knoxville is the ugliest city I have ever seen in America...” The local Garden Club, led by Betsy Creekmore, Martha Ashe, and Betsy Goodson, started a project to prove him wrong. They hoped to showcase the natural beauty of the city they loved. The project they spearheaded planted the very first seeds of the Dogwood Trail. Today, the Dogwood trails cover over 90 miles in 13 neighborhoods. Take a drive, a walk, or a bike ride and enjoy the scenic natural beauty of our city! The trails are open annually from April 1-30th, just in time to showcase the beauty of spring in East Tennessee!

South Knoxville offers three main areas of trails to visit. Chapman Hwy, Island Home, and Lakemoor Hills. Please read through the following few pages on these trails.
