The Island Home neighborhood is located in South Knoxville and is known for its 1909 marble entrance pillars. Residents and locals know it as “Island Home.” The neighborhood is located at the intersections of Island Home Avenue and Maplewood Drive, adjacent to the Tennessee River. Newer homes are located at Island Home Avenue, and houses built in the 1910s and 20s, notable for their many Craftsman bungalows, are in Fisher Place.

The community is known for the Tennessee River on the north, the Tennessee School for the Deaf campus on the east, Island Home Avenue on the south, and Ijams Nature Park.

Ijams Nature Center

Ijams provides more than 300 acres of beautiful, gently sloping woodlands flowing southward from the Tennessee River and accommodates a wide range of habitats and exhibits, a museum store, miles of natural trails, the Navitat Canopy Adventure, a climbing crag, and access to a quarry lake and the river for paddling and fishing activities. You’ll never be bored with so many things to do at Ijams! From hiking the trails and playing at Jo’s Grove to paddling at Mead’s Quarry Lake and working out at the Ijams Primal Playground, there’s something for everyone at Ijams. The grounds are open from 8 am to dusk every day. Get a trail map or see closures before you come!

Take the Sevier Ave/Hillwood Dr exit and turn left onto Sevier Ave, which becomes Hillwood Dr. At the end of Hillwood, turn right onto Island Home Ave, then take the first left to stay on Island Home Ave. Ijams will be approximately one mile ahead on the left.

Island Home Park

Island Home Park hosts a scenic waterfront recreational play area in the Island Home neighborhood. In addition to a ballfield, tennis court, playground, and picnic facilities, a paved loop trail runs through the park, connecting with the Will Skelton Greenway and winding along the Tennessee River, through the woods, and over to Ijams Nature Center.
